Local Government Initiative
« on: August 02, 2011, 09:50:19 GMT »

I think this link to the Local Government Initiative (LGI) could be useful for the community.
http://lgi.osi.hu/

Inititally funded by the Soros Foundation, LGI works to promote democratic and effective local government and public administration, and by advancing policy analysis as a tool for decision making in public affairs.

There is a database of experts and an interesting section of the website dedicated to the Fiscal Decentralized Initiative that run from 2001 to 2008.

This initiative is no longer being funded by the Open Society Institute according to my understanding.  However, the website still functions and much of the publications and other resources are still available by download.  There are quite a number of publications on fiscal decentralization and other topics that are well done and provide useful case studies on a comparative country basis.  They are mainly focused on the transition countries of central and eastern Europe and former Soviet Union.  Unfortunately, they are a bit outdated now, but still useful.

Glen, Thanks for the update. Do you have any useful pointers for other sources of information on topical issues in fiscal decentralization?

Not sure that members are aware of NISPAcee, stands for Network of Institutes and Schools of Public Administration in Central and Eastern Europe.  They have some publications on financial management and a couple of working groups that deal with this.  They publish newsletter, a journal, and books as well. Would be worth a look at what they are doing in this area, they hold annual conference in April or May, I think,
