Interesting graphic on UK public spending
« on: October 27, 2011, 09:43:39 GMT »
Here's an interesting graphical presentation of UK public expenditure:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/interactive/2011/oct/26/public-spending-uk-government-department

Might be a helpful way of presenting the budget on finance ministry websites?

Interesting to see the scale of benefit spending in the UK - 'Work & Pensions'. But that's not all: there's £40 billion of tax credits and child benefit under HM Revenue and Customs. That makes around £200 billion out of total of £693 billion. I guess this is fairly typical of most W. European budgets.

Armenia has something very similar on its e-Government site - the Minister of Finance gave us a demonstration once in his office and very impressive it looked to.  The link to the portal is attached below.

The paper version of the Guardian graphic was different and had breakdowns within each department (too much information for a web page).  If I can scan a copy then I'll post it as it's an even better representation.

If you click on the bubbles on the graphic you are taken to the departmental breakdowns.

Perhaps however the effort of the Armenian Govt in providing graphic representation of the budget deserves some recognition.

Just checked it out. It's just what I had in mind - great! In fact,  the Armenian e-gov site looks altogether very informative and user-friendly - you can even track the progress of your letter to the government!
